About Bornholm

Bornholm is a Danish island situated in the Baltic Sea, 37 km from the south coast of Sweden and 135 km from the mainland of Denmark. It covers an area of 588 km2; a walk around the island by the coast would be 144 km.

Bornholm has 42.800 inhabitants. 14.000 live in Roenne, the island’s biggest town situated on the west coast. The next biggest town is Nexoe on the west coast with 5.000 inhabitants.

Bornholm is also known as the Pearl of the Baltic or the Sunshine Island; it is the place in Denmark that has the most sun and the island climate gives later summers that last longer. Average day temperature in summer is 20 to 27 degrees Celsius. Also the nature of Bornholm differs from that of the rest of Denmark. Two thirds of the island’s bedrock being granite, the nature of Bornholm varies from rocks and steep hills in the north to long sandy beaches in the south. All this attracts more than 600.000 tourists to Bornholm each year from both Denmark and abroad.

Bornholm is famous for the many creative people that live here or have settled here over time, especially within the arts of ceramics, glass blowing and painting. Bornholm also has the only school of ceramics and glass blowing in Denmark.

Another important characteristic that you certainly will have the chance to experience yourselves, is the wide range of local food products that the island offers. You can get everything from beer to rape oil, flour, world famous cheeses, bread, chocolate, ice cream, wine and much else, all of it produced locally with local ingredients.
